Why Magic May Be Bad
When looking at worlds like Harry Potter and other mystical worlds like The Magicians, it exemplifies a world of wonder, of limitless possibilities. By the title of this article, you might think that I absolutely hate “magic”, but in fact I absolutely love to dwell in these worlds of wonder. I immerse myself in them, pretending I am this or that character so that I can live, at least for a small while, my fantasy reality. My favorite part specifically is being able to fly, whether it be by broom or simply taking off to the skies by some mystical and very selective breakage of gravity (hah).
However, I do believe there is a dark side to magic, and no I am not talking about those would not be named nose less villains. Instead, I would like to draw particular attention to Quantum Mechanics. You might be asking yourself, what does Quantum Mechanics (QM) even have to do with Magic? Well, there is a little phrase that I love to think about from Arthur C. Clarke, that goes, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” As I dive deeper into different lectures on and literature on Quantum Mechanics, I am starting to realize that this technology is sufficiently advanced technology that can be indistinguishable from magic in certain hands. For one that truly understands QM, there are so many opportunities within science and beyond that they may be able to achieve. QM, however, is very difficult to decipher and as you may imagine, there are already very large corporations within the field trying to uncover all the hidden secrets dormant within it. This poses two problems, the first one is that it is such a complicated topic that you need to find resources from these large players to even begin mining at some of that knowledge. As you may imagine, large for-profit corporations are trying to keep much of this knowledge under wraps as much as they can so they can get first dibs at the “magic”. The second is that QM in its infancy has the potential to be a threat to national security using cipher decryption. In its maturity, however, it has the potential to upend the world as we know, eliminating privacy completely, and even destroying the world.
There is an easy solution to this issue however, for this, we’re going to have to imagine that we are currently in a quantum mechanical simulation. Our whole entire world, just pretend for a moment that we are currently living in a simulation. This idea has been floating around for a while, pretty much ever since the series of the Matrix came out. Let us now say that instead of creating a world as simple as the one in the Matrix, we instead created one like Harry Potter. In this world, you are a wizard, you can perform spells to do your chores, and you can ride brooms to fly. It seems magical and fantastical for anybody who inhabits that world. However, to achieve all of these amazing feats, there are very real quantum mechanical implications happening within that simulation. All this knowledge is not known to you, why? Well, because for you the world and everything within it is quite simple. You might encounter a baddie that gives you a hard time here and there, but ultimately, you can do anything within that world, so you do not question how any of it is made or why things are as they are.
Just that proposition gives me shivers, now fast forward many generations of this very concept. As humans, we have now lost all knowledge there is to know about Quantum Mechanics and advanced sciences. Instead, we live our lives in a fascinating dream that we ultimately choose not to escape from. I want to emphasize that advanced “magic” may still be a godsend, especially if it has the ability to fast forward delicate procedures in medicine, or cure diseases that are as of yet uncured such as cancer. However, its pertinent that as a collective we keep advancing the sciences and storing information when it comes to these instances so we can best make sure that knowledge is not ultimately lost and these nightmare scenarios come to fruition.
